How to Care for your Flat Iron

If you’ve finally found the perfect flat iron, then you want to make sure it lasts as long as possible. The key to that is cleaning it after each use. Before doing any cleaning or maintenance on your flat iron, make sure it is switched off and unplugged from the wall socket beforehand. If it’s recently been used, give it several minutes to cool down so that you don’t risk burns.

If you use styling products with your flat iron, then over time the products will build up on the plates of the flat iron. This can cause the plates to be sticky, and result in pulled hair as you slide your hair through the flat iron. You should clean the plates after each use with a special flat iron cleaning solution and a soft cloth (available at beauty supply stores).

Over time, you may notice that the handles of your flat iron have become loose at the hinge. Making sure that your flat iron is completely cooled down and unplugged from the wall socket, you can (on most models) remove the covering over the hinge and tighten the screw underneath to get the two arms of the flat iron taut again.

If you have a habit of wrapping the electrical cord around your styling appliances, this is a habit you should break, because it can easily damage to power cord. Just bundle the cord loosely, and if you want it to look neat while it’s in storage, get a heat resistant mat that turns into a storage case.
